How to Prep Your AC for Summer in Porter TX (Before It's Too Late)

Texas summers don't give your AC much of a break. If you live here in Porter or the surrounding Houston area, you know that our heat and humidity push your air conditioner to its absolute limit every single day.

When your AC suddenly stops blowing cold air in the middle of July, it is easy to panic. I know people are tired of high-pressure HVAC salesmen showing up and telling them that a simple breakdown requires a $10,000 replacement.

At TwinStar Air Conditioning & Heating, we do things differently. We exhaust every repair option before we ever suggest a new system. But as someone with over 10 years of hands-on experience, I can tell you that the absolute best way to avoid an expensive repair is to prep your system before it breaks down.

Here is a quick checklist of things you can do right now to get your AC ready for the Porter summer heat.

    1. Change Your Air Filter (Yes, Right Now)

Clean vs dirty HVAC air filter

This sounds incredibly simple, but it is the number one reason I get called out for emergency AC repair.

Your AC needs to breathe. When your air filter gets clogged with dust and pet hair, the blower motor has to work twice as hard to push air through your house. Eventually, that motor will overheat and burn out. Checking and changing your filter every 30 to 60 days during the summer is the cheapest, easiest way to protect your system.

    2. Clear the Outdoor Unit

Take a walk out to your backyard and look at your condenser unit (the big metal box sitting outside).

Is there tall grass growing around it? Are there bushes pushing up against the sides? Your outdoor unit needs at least two feet of clear space on all sides to pull in air and release the heat from inside your house. If it is choked by weeds or covered in dirt, your system will struggle to cool your home and your energy bills will skyrocket. Grab a hose and gently wash the dirt off the fins, and trim back any landscaping.

    3. Flush the Drain Line

Houston humidity is famous for a reason. Your air conditioner's job isn't just to cool the air; it also pulls that heavy humidity out of your house. All that moisture turns into condensation and drips down a drain line.

Over time, algae and mold can build up in that pipe and cause a major clog. When the pipe clogs, water backs up, and your AC will completely shut itself down to prevent flooding your ceiling or floors. Pouring a cup of white vinegar down your AC drain line a few times a summer helps kill the algae and keeps the water flowing.

    4. Test the System Early

Don't wait for a 100-degree day to find out your AC is blowing warm air. Turn your thermostat down a few degrees early in the morning and let it run. Put your hand up to the vents. Is the airflow strong? Is the air actually cold?

If the airflow is weak or the air feels lukewarm, that is your early warning sign. Catching a problem now usually means a simple fix—like a worn-out capacitor or a low refrigerant level—rather than a total breakdown on a Sunday afternoon.

    5. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

While you can change the filter and clear the brush yourself, a professional tune-up is what truly keeps your system running efficiently and helps avoid costly breakdowns.

During a full system tune-up, we check your airflow and test all the electrical connections. We make sure your motors aren't drawing too much power, and we verify that your refrigerant levels are exactly where they need to be.
